Sulfur, also referred to as sulphur, is a nonmetallic chemical element positioned in the periodic table with the symbol S and atomic number 16. This tasteless, odorless, brittle solid material exhibits a pale yellow color, appearing very light and soft. Sulfur is a poor conductor of electricity and does not dissolve in water. It is naturally abundant, often occurring in combination with other elements, such as sulfite (e.g., pyrite) and sulfate (e.g., Gypsum). Pure sulfur deposits can be found near hot springs, volcanic regions, and mining areas.

Typically, plants require approximately one-tenth as much sulfur as they do nitrogen.
